In 1985, he started a direct agribusiness department. With his dedication and leadership, the team at FNBOʼs agribusiness department grew to $2.5 billion loan commitments between 1985 and 2020. “I was so blessed and thankful that I went to work for the family who owned the First National Bank. They brought stability to lending in the industry,” Jensen says. “When the cattle markets and the commodity markets took a downturn, they never panicked. They never walked away from the industry, they always stood by it.” At the time of his retirement in 2020, Jensen was a senior vice president and a member of the bankʼs board of directors. Throughout his career, Jensen spent countless days talking to college students and mentoring them as a guest presenter in agriculture economics courses at multiple universities, as well as being involved in the cattle industry on state and national levels. Leading and Learning Jensen has been an active member of Nebraska Cattlemen, the National Cattlemanʼs Beef Association and served on the CattleFax Board of Directors for eight years. “I think itʼs important as a leader to be able to give back, whether it be through other ag industries and organizations or just getting involved. Iʼve gotten so much out of those experiences,” Jensen says. “For example, in CattleFax, where we were predominantly Midwest based, it was such a great opportunity to meet leaders and representatives from across the country in the industry and see how different operations do things and be successful at it.” Growing up in the stockyards and spending decades on the lending side of agriculture has given Jensen a unique perspective on the agriculture industry. Heʼs seen the highs and lows and what it takes for families to succeed. “One of the things that can be difficult for family businesses is transitioning generations. Something that I think benefited a lot of our customers is their children went out and did something different for a while before they came back to the family businesses,“ Jensen explains. “Itʼs always good to get somebody elseʼs opinion and see how things can be done differently before you head back to a family operation.” Jensen forged a reputation in the ag lending industry that left producers knowing that a handshake and his word were better than any piece of paper. Looking to the future, Jensen is hopeful that generations to come will continue the honest work ethic that the agriculture industry is known for. “You have got to stay optimistic. I mean, particularly with the way cattle prices are in todayʼs world and the uncertainty of the global economy, you have just got to look at things in the long term – that agriculture is going to be a survivor,” Jensen says. “Even though things are going to change, there are lots of opportunities for young people, and they need young people in the business.” ~NC~
