36 NEBRASKA CATTLEMAN August 2024 SPECIAL TO THIS ISSUE 2024 Midyear Meeting Recap The Nebraska Cattlemen (NC) Midyear meeting was held in Ogallala this year and was a delightful mix of fellowship, acknowledgement of achievement, association business and informative speakers and tours. Following is a recap of the highlights. Board of Directors Meeting The NC Board of Directors received updates from staff, councils and regional directors on their activities and actions on Wednesday morning prior to the golf tournament. The 2024-25 budget was presented by the Executive and Finance Committee and staff and was approved by the board. The bylaws change requested by the Allied Industries Council was also approved. Committee Meeting Activity Northeast Community College, Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) each gave reports to the Education and Research Committee at Midyear. NC Director of Communications Libby Schroeder explained how to develop and work with internship programs and shared ideas on how to work with students during the program to help them find their passion. NC Executive Vice President Laura Field gave a legislative update on the last legislative session and plans for upcoming sessions. A report was given about a recent meeting with Gov. Pillen’s staff on tax challenges and his plans moving forward. A full room participated in the Natural Resources and Environment Committee meeting and a great lineup of speakers. Joe Wahlgren, Twin Platte Natural Resource Districts Board member, shared information and an interactive presentation about the water data program the group is leading. New Interim Director of the Nebraska Department of Energy and Environment (NDEE) Thad Fineran shared his background and vision for the department under his leadership and engaged in a Q&A with members about issues of importance. Mary-Thomas Hart, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) legal counsel, gave updates on federal environmental issues affecting cattle producers, including CAFO regulations, Waters of the U.S. updates and others.
