August 2026 NEBRASKA CATTLEMAN 27 after the mold has already started to grow by binding or denaturing the mycotoxins, which are the secondary metabolites of mold growth, to help prevent continued mold growth in feed products. “You don’t know what your problem is until you’ve tested the feed, whether that’s the forages, the silages, your corn crop or your soybean crop,” explains Eugene Rodberg, senior product manager at Kemin. “Sending a sample into a lab that can do mycotoxin testing will help you understand what you’re facing, and then from there, once you determine your level and the type of mycotoxin that’ll be in the feed, you can come up with a strategy to try to control it.” Once you receive your test results, experts from the lab, such as Kern-Lunbery, or sales reps like those from Kemin, can help you interpret the results and make a plan for using those feed sources in the safest manner for your livestock. “Sit down with people who are familiar with these different toxins and know which combination of toxins is going to be more of a problem than other combinations,” Rodberg says. “There are many different toxins out there, and each of them in combination with other ones is going to have a very different impact on animal performance. “Then the next step in the process is to sit down with people who know which toxin binders are going to be the most effective in a drought year.” If you want to test for mycotoxins, Ward Laboratories in Nebraska is one option or check out the Mycotoxin Grain Testing Directory from Iowa State by scanning the QR code.
