There was also information offered on CME Group’s ongoing review of CME Live Cattle Futures Contract specifications, including a new requirement that all cattle tendered for CME delivery come from BQA-certified operations. Education and Research Committee Larry Kuehn with the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center shared information on recent beef accomplishments at USMARC in the areas of genetics and genomics, animal health, meat safety and meat quality, environment and reproduction, and growth. He also gave a staff update. The Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation report from Loren Berger went over the new annual report, available to all at the meeting or online at nebraskacattlemen. org. The foundation is grateful for all donations and continues to contribute to several programs. Policy was reviewed. NC Career Fair The NC Allied Industries Council offered a Career Discovery Fair to high school and college students at convention, which was attended by 55 students from across Nebraska. The career fair featured potential employers that were also trade show vendors at the convention – the only businesses and organizations eligible to participate in the career fair. Students spoke with company representatives about potential job opportunities and were provided with a packet to take notes and reflect on their conversations. NC provided a photographer and photobooth for students to take professional headshots. Students also participated in a workshop titled “Discovering Your Why” from UNL Animal Science Department Head Deb VanOverbeke. Animal Health and Nutrition Committee The Animal Health and Nutrition Committee heard from Jason Walker, public affairs specialist for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kan. The facility will eventually replace Plum Island as the USDA Agriculture Research Service Laboratory for the identification of livestock diseases. Research on vaccines and protocols will also be conducted at this facility. The buildings are in place, and they are in the stand-up phase, which will include testing of the facilities and protocols before any pathogens will be transferred from Plum Island. This transfer is still a few years away.
