They have increased planning and holding exercises and have taken their experiences from high-path avian influenza to build out plans for other species. He encouraged all cattlemen to make a Secure Beef Supply plan to best position themselves for an event such as a foot and mouth disease outbreak. Taxation Committee NC President-Elect Dick Pierce and NC Executive Vice President Laura Field gave an update on Gov. Pillen’s Valuation Task Force. Field and Pierce serve as members of the task force on behalf of Nebraska Cattlemen. Pierce discussed the various topics covered by the task force to this point, including defining tax relief, an adequate dollar amount for tax relief, a hard cap on valuation increases, removal of sales tax exemptions and a sales tax increase. Jon Cannon, executive director of the Nebraska Association of County Officials (NACO), gave the committee an update on the Nebraska inheritance tax. Statutory changes were made recently to lower the percentage of inheritance tax collected, and Cannon shared how counties budget and account for those dollars. Further statutory changes are likely, and the committee discussed those changes with Cannon. NCW Consumer Promotion and Education Committee The Nebraska CattleWomen (NCW) Consumer Promotion and Education Committee continues to work with the Nebraska Beef Council and the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation on promotion and educational materials. Adam Wegner, Nebraska Beef Council, gave an update on several current programs that Beef Council staff are developing. Numbers from the beef passport and information on their holiday campaign were also shared. Annual Business Meeting Friday morning began with the popular market report presentation from Jeff Stolle, NC vice president of marketing, followed by the annual business meeting. All NC councils and committees presented reports on their respective business meetings and proposed resolutions and policy statements, followed by discussion and votes on all by the active NC members in attendance.
