This ensures new calves are always born in a ‘clean’ environment where there haven’t been calves recently. This movement will continue until all calves are born.” She adds that from this research, they found that calves that were born first were actually the healthiest, then they saw sickness in the later born calves. “It’s because any pathogen, or bug, that those early cows and calves had, doesn’t really affect their immune system because the amount is manageable. But as you get more cows and calves in the area, you just basically multiply the pathogen load, so then those little calves’ immune systems get overwhelmed and they get really sick,” Waechter-Mead adds. This can seem daunting to producers who don’t have a lot of space or very large paddocks. But if you can modify it for your situation – even splitting your pasture or lot up into two different calving spaces – then you can separate them better, Waechter-Mead suggests.
