June/July 2024 NEBRASKA CATTLEMAN 37 After I complete my bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics with minors in Krutsinger Beef Industry Scholars, Engler Entrepreneurship and animal science, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in animal science specializing in ruminant nutrition. Following the completion of this graduate program, I plan to return to my family’s farm and feedlot operation north of Columbus, and join my sister, brother-in-law and parents in feeding cattle and raising crops. If the opportunity arises, I plan to consider a side career in feedlot nutrition consulting along with feeding cattle. I am thankful to have been surrounded by highly intelligent people for most of my life who have emphasized stewardship, generosity and innovation. Even my family members who don’t have a direct interest in cattle still find ways to get involved with promoting the cattle industry. My sister Erika is a registered dietician and has been an outspoken proponent of the nutritional benefits of beef in the diet. My brother Cort is on track to be an aerial applicator and has helped raise funds and volunteer for ranchers during severe weather events in the past. I am lucky enough to work with my sister, Liz, brother-in-law, Braden, and parents every time I am back home. There is nothing more rewarding in life than to have a great relationship with your family and get to work with them every day. As I feed cattle in the mornings and my little niece waves from her car seat at her mom, dad, grandpa and grandma who are riding pens and running equipment, I think to myself – this is truly what makes Nebraska the Beef State. I would like to thank the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation for the opportunity to apply for scholarships throughout my academic career. I would also like to thank the generous donors including those involved in the Retail Value Steer Challenge who have invested in the education of young people with a passion for the cattle industry throughout Nebraska. The Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation’s commitment to the education of young people with a passion for the Nebraska cattle industry is encouraging to me, and I am thankful for the many doors that have been opened for students in Nebraska because of the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation. I am hopeful that more young people will see the same reward as I do in a life spent working with cattle. ~NC~ Carsten Loseke GUIDING PRODUCERS TODAY TO FEED THE WORLD TOMORROW Scan the QR code with your smartphone to learn more about Feed and NIRS analysis at Ward Laboratories! 308 - 234 - 2418 www.wardlab.com Ward Laboratories has the analysis, experience and experts to help you reach production goals all season long.
