NC Board Members Testify Before the Legislature Jared Walahoski, DVM, and chair of the Nebraska Cattlemen (NC) Animal Health and Nutrition Committee, testified on behalf the Nebraska Ag Leaders Working Group, which includes NC, before members of the Health and Human Services Committee in support of LB1062. The bill aims to alleviate the large animal veterinarian shortage in Nebraska. “There are many factors that affect large animal vets who serve the livestock industry of our state. The students in vet schools often choose to specialize in small, companion animal practices. Working on large animals can be more physically demanding. There are times when large animal vets are required to make on-farm or ranch calls because a producer cannot safely bring an animal to the clinic, night or day, weekends or holidays,” Walahoski said. “We are falling behind every year in having adequate new vets serving the largest segment of our economy in Nebraska, which is putting more burden on the existing vets in practice.” Sam Drinnin, chair-elect of the NC Natural Resources and Environment Committee, testified before members of the Natural Resources Committee in support of confirming NC Board member Eric Hansen to the Nebraska Environmental Trust. While testifying, Drinnin stated, “I’ve been proud to serve alongside Eric Hansen on the Nebraska Cattlemen Board of Directors and enjoy watching him chair the Nebraska Cattlemen Natural Resources Committee. Whether its tackling invasive cedar tree issues or promoting rotational grazing, Eric Hansen believes environmental stewardship is not just a buzzword you throw around in a board meeting, but a way of life.” Dawson County Cattlemen Scholarship Program The Dawson County Cattlemen (DCC) Scholarship program was established to assist graduating or graduated students from the Gothenburg, Cozad, Lexington, Overton, Eustis/Farnam and S-E-M high schools who desire to attain higher education. Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska The 2024 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska, hosted by Scott and Kristin Schiff and their family, will be held June 7-8 on their ranch near Minatare. Like many other Nebraskans, Scott and Kristin have had cancer touch their families and friends. Together, with more than 500 volunteers and an estimated 4,500 attendees, we ask that you join us in providing cancer awareness and raising funds for cancer research in 2024. In addition, the ball will promote beef as part of a healthy diet and celebrate our resiliency and ability to overcome the challenges before us.
