With a career as a beef cattle veterinarian, Funk’s involvement in the industry has always been hands-on. Over the years, their operation has evolved, ranging from yearlings on pasture to their current cow-calf herd of 40 cows, managed in partnership with a neighbor and their children. The family operation emphasizes youth projects, including 4-H and FFA, while marketing calves as show prospects, feeder cattle or freezer beef. For Funk, the best part of the beef industry is the diversity of operations and how producers adapt to various challenges. She’s particularly optimistic about the future, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of youth involved in programs like FFA and livestock judging. “Watching the next generation step up gives me confidence in the industry’s future,” she shares. Funk’s connection with Nebraska Cattlemen began through her local affiliate in northwest Nebraska, where she worked to revitalize community engagement. After relocating to Lawrence in 2020, she continued her involvement with the South Central Cattlemen. Encouraged by local leaders, Funk accepted her board position to focus on helping members navigate the complexities of modern beef production. ~NC~
