As I look at the people around our boardroom table and think back over the years, we have been very successful at surrounding ourselves with just that – good people! At the beginning of 2025, we added four new board members: Keith Kreikemeier of West Point, Shannon Peterson of Gothenburg, John Schroeder of Cozad and Butch Schuler of Redington. They came to our board orientation eager to learn, ask questions, understand, listen and simply jump in with both feet! It’s a blessing to see folks volunteer their time for the good of our industry, not for their own benefit, but to support us all. Each of them comes from diverse backgrounds, whether cow-calf operations or feedyards, but as they introduced themselves, there was a common denominator – they are all excited to give back to agriculture and the beef industry they love. Another interesting fact is that they have all found a way for their children to come back and be part of their operations. They are cultivating another generation, which is great news for our industry and Nebraska! All our board members are folks just like you, members of their community who are involved and engaged, and who work hard each and every day. It’s one of the things I enjoy about working for this industry. Producers are genuinely good people, and over the years, I’ve been surrounded by plenty! The board also elected officers for the upcoming year – Rosemary Anderson as chair, June Loseke as vice-chair, Michele Cutler as treasurer and Jim Ramm as secretary. We are also excited that Mark Goes will begin serving a three-year term as the Region 7 Federation vice president, and Michele Cutler is going into her second year serving on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Executive Committee as our revenue seat. June Loseke has also served as the co-chair of the Stakeholder Engagement Committee the last two years and will serve one more year while the Long Range Plan is revised. Leadership opportunities abound and I’m thankful that these volunteers choose to give their time, especially at the national level, for the good of us all. But I also believe strongly in giving accolades to those who choose to focus their efforts on serving the industry at the state level. At the end of the day, everyone is managing their own operation and time is valuable, so whatever their involvement level, it is sincerely appreciated! The Beef Checkoff is what brings them together around the boardroom table with a mission statement to strengthen beef demand in the global marketplace. Board members work on building budgets, making difficult decisions on what programs to fund, supporting initiatives for the good of our industry and evaluating projects and their impact.
