I am currently working on purchasing and importing a string of Chilean horses, an example of how these exchanges can move from a simple ranch visit and conversation to international trade. Same Challenges, Different America Chilean producers face many of the same challenges Nebraska ranchers do – weather variability, water limitations, rising input costs and labor constraints. Water scarcity, in particular, has shaped management decisions and reinforced the importance of efficiency and long-term planning. History has also shaped mindset. Producers are diversified, operate conservatively, understand risk and appreciate stability in a way that only comes from lived experience. This trade mission reinforced that agriculture does not operate in isolation. Agriculture is global, but its success remains deeply local. Personally, the takeaway from this trip was profound. Obviously, the beef industry is different and bigger than what’s just going on here in Nebraska but traveling and seeing it firsthand opened my eyes a little more.
