This work uses longterm climate data (e.g., precipitation, temperature, humidity and elevation), soil information, satellite imagery and producer surveys to create a comprehensive representation of the non-genetic factors affecting herds. These are then integrated into genomic predictions, yielding estimates of genetic potential for a specific microenvironment/management. This work is far from being implemented, but it has shed light on some of the factors that drive GxE interactions. Our producer management survey shows that even operations close to one another can have enormous variation in supplementation, reproductive management and preventative health interventions. Further statistical analyses have shown that this management variation may account for a larger share of non-genetic variation than previously thought. This work also aims to identify genes that perform consistently across a spectrum of genetic environments and management intensities. The ultimate goal of this work is to help provide improved genetic decision support tools to commercial producers. By integrating environment and management inputs into predictions, we will do a better job of placing genetics in the right environment to succeed. If you are a registered Angus producer and haven’t responded to the management survey, it’s not too late! You can take the 10- to 5-minute survey by scanning the QR code. Stay on the lookout for further findings and outcomes of this project in the coming months and years. ~NC~ GENETIC TOOLS FOR BREEDING BETTER ADAPTED CATTLE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 52
