PEERS NCIG WHEN ONE ACCIDENT CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING JOE ROBERTS | CHIEF MARKET OFFICER Iam sure you can bring to mind an insurance claim a family member, friend or someone in your community experienced that seemed to grow far larger than anyone expected. What started as a single accident slowly turned into something involving hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. When we hear those stories, they often sound unbelievable and we think, “That won’t happen to me.” While we hope those situations never happen, we still need to plan for the possibility to protect our finances and our future. If you experienced a large claim, what would it look like for you? Let’s say after a heavy rain, part of your fence was washed out overnight. A few of your cows wandered through the opening and made their way onto a rural highway early the next morning. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but a vehicle was totaled. What started as a fence repair quickly becomes property damage, medical bills and legal expenses that turn into a serious financial concern. How much of that could you comfortably cover today? HOW LIABILITY INSURANCE RESPONDS Having a general liability policy and an umbrella policy in place can step in to respond to a claim like this and help protect the operation from absorbing the full financial impact. Liability insurance is coverage that protects you against legal claims from third parties for injury or property damage. It helps when someone else claims they were harmed or their property was damaged because of your operation. This coverage can help pay for legal defense, settlements or court judgments up to the limits of your policy. COMMON LIABILITY EXPOSURES For cattle producers, liability claims often arise from everyday situations. Escaped livestock can lead to roadway accidents on county roads or highways. Neighbors, family members or helpers can be injured during cattle handling activities such as branding, sorting or loading. Cattle can damage neighboring crops, fences or buildings. Livestock kept on leased pasture or land you do not own can also create additional exposure if something goes wrong. These situations are not unusual, and they are simply part of doing business in agriculture. Understanding how these risks show up in your operation is an important step in determining whether your liability coverage is aligned with your needs. UMBRELLA INSURANCE Umbrella insurance is an additional layer of liability protection that sits above your underlying liability policies. Once the limits of your primary policy are reached, the umbrella coverage can help cover additional costs. With today’s medical expenses, vehicle values and legal fees, claims can reach policy limits faster than many producers expect. Umbrella coverage can help in situations involving severe injuries from a roadway accident, extensive property damage or legal judgments that exceed standard limits. While not every operation needs the same level of protection, this added layer can play an important role in protecting assets when a claim grows beyond what was initially anticipated.
