Since that time, beef exports to Saudi Arabia have doubled from a year ago in both volume (575 metric tons) and value ($6.2 million) (Based on monthly USDA export data, April through July). Through support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Beef Checkoff Program, USMEF conducted workshops in Saudi Arabia this summer to re-introduce U.S. beef to key buyers in Saudi Arabia. Market access for U.S. beef has also recently improved in the United Kingdom (UK). When the UK departed the European Union (EU) in 2020, U.S. beef lost duty-free access to the British market. This created a very difficult business climate, because U.S. beef entering the UK also has to meet all the same technical requirements imposed by the EU. So, adding a 20 percent duty in a market that was already expensive to supply put U.S. beef in a non-competitive position. But the Trump administration negotiated a 13,000 metric ton duty-free quota with the UK, which became operational earlier this year. In April, shortly after the first duty-free shipments arrived under the new quota, USMEF conducted launch events for U.S. beef in London, made possible through support from USDA, the Beef Checkoff Program and state beef councils from Nebraska, South Dakota and Texas. Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen was on hand for these activities, promoting Nebraska beef to key buyers in the British foodservice and retail sectors. At long last, U.S. beef also recently gained access to Nigeria – an enormous country with the world’s sixth largest population at more than 240 million. Nigeria is the third largest economy in Africa, behind South Africa and Egypt. It will take time to develop the Nigerian market, which has a long history of protectionism, so prospective buyers have little experience or familiarity with high-quality beef. But there is already interest in U.S. beef among some foodservice suppliers, and USMEF is working to identify potential opportunities. For January through July, U.S. beef and beef variety meat exports were 8 percent below last year’s pace at just CHINA ACCESS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 30 Nebraska Gov.
