32 NEBRASKA CATTLEMAN October 2025 Finally, here is a summary of two current research projects in the USMARC feedlot. • Currently, there are two commercial beta agonists commonly used by the beef industry in feedlot cattle. Recent research has shown that relative to ractopamine hydrochloride, lubabegron fumarate results in reduced marbling levels. That is, lubabegron fumarate reduces beef carcass quality. An ongoing experiment is being conducted in collaboration with the University of Nebraska to determine if supplemental dietary fat during the finishing phase will offset the negative effects of lubabegron fumarate on marbling deposition. In the initial phase of the experiment, the added fat treatment increased average daily gain in the steers by 12 percent. It remains to be seen if that increase in gain will be reflected in marbling levels. Stay tuned. • USMARC is conducting research focused on the level of interaction between beef cattle genetic background and growth-promotant implant strategy for beef carcass quality. In this study, one group of steers received an implant (RevalorXS) 200 days before harvest and a second group of steers did not receive an implant. Our preliminary data indicates that there is a tendency for an interaction between cattle type and implant strategy on beef carcass marbling scores. Specifically, the negative effect of an implant on beef carcass marbling scores was much smaller for cattle descended from continental European beef breeds than for cattle descended from British beef breeds. For tenderness, assessed as slice shear force, there was no interaction between cattle type and implant status. As always, we greatly appreciate the support we receive from Nebraska Cattlemen and the beef industry! We look forward to serving the beef industry for generations to come. ~NC~ USMARC CONTINUED FROM PAGE 30 ® BY CONNOR AGRISCIENCE SILAGE BARRIER FILMS Deters birds and animals NC DISPATCH Young Cattlemen’s Connections Young Cattlemen’s Connections (YCC) nominees are now being accepted for the class of 2026.
