In the years leading up to the November 2024 border closure, it was rather common for the U.S. to import about 1.25 million head of Mexican-origin feeder cattle per year – and 2024’s movement seemed on pace to be more in the area of about 1.4 million head. In “cowboy terms” and using a conservative estimate of 5/6’s (10 months out of 12) of 1.25 million head, the effect on the U.S. feeder cattle supply chain due to the border closure has likely been equivalent to more than 60 percent of the effect of the liquidation of beef cows within the U.S. during this four-year window, compressed into 10 months. Furthermore, it was no coincidence that this last steep runup in fed cattle prices launched from a time frame that was roughly 180 days after the closure of the border. The supply chain effects are now being felt at both the feeder cattle and fed cattle levels. The border closure is a factor that is very unique to this particular cyclical transition – and one that more or less invalidates any back-of-the-napkin comparisons to previous cycles. Once again – there’s no road map. ~NC~ MARKETS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 38
