The Red Barn stands proud as the information center for the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway in Broken Bow. In its former life, the barn housed Hereford cattle owned by O.K. Luther. Marshall told stories about the show that he remembered as a youth, which ran from 1930 to 1954. Celebrating Hereford Heritage in Nebraska LINDA TEAHON | CONTRIBUTING WRITER The Hereford breed has a long and rich history in Nebraska, which is remembered and kept alive by Nebraskans for Hereford Heritage, Inc. This history was celebrated on Oct. 7, 2023, during the annual Hereford Crossroads reception and dinner at the Sandoz Center on the Chadron State College campus. This event is held to honor bulls and producers that had an impact on Nebraska’s Hereford cattle industry throughout the years. Inducted into the Herd Bull Hall of Fame this year was the bull Domino Lad C. Shortly after the Great Depression, he was purchased from the TO Ranch in Raton, N.M., by Virg Kennedy of Harrison and the Buffington Hereford Ranch of Crawford for $38,000. Domino was never turned out to pasture-breed cows. Instead, cows were brought to him to allow his service on the largest possible number of females. He lived to the ripe old age of 18 and, after his death, Kennedy had the bull placed in a piano box and buried in the yard. CONTINUED ON PAGE 64
