72 NEBRASKA CATTLEMAN January 2024 The same is true of our human-to-human interactions. We don’t look at them and automatically take responsibility for our part in how the other person is reacting. It’s not in our nature, but we’ve learned to do it with cattle. Granted, it is a fair bit easier to accept with cattle, considering they don’t speak English, so it really does fall on us to understand GOOD MOVEMENT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 70 them and respond accordingly. Also, cattle don’t experience emotions as humans do, and they can’t lie, which again makes it easier with cattle because what you see is exactly what you get. However, the principles of good movement and communication are the same across species. It starts with us. It starts with a growing self-awareness, then in social awareness and having an understanding that there’s always a why and a reason behind the behaviors we see and exhibit. When we aren’t aware, we can and often do assign our own meaning to those behaviors without knowing what’s truly driving them, and that is where most communication breaks down. After literally years of ruminating on the idea that the principles of good movement could also apply to humans, extensive research, education and observation, I developed what I call Good Movement Trainings. When we focus on gaining good movement from our animals every time we interact with them, in effect we’re eliminating meaningless stress on the animals (and ourselves, too). What results isn’t just time and labor-saving herd moves that go more quickly and efficiently with minimal effort, but also overall improved herd health and increased performance. When we focus on good movement with our fellow humans, we eliminate meaningless stress on them (and ourselves, too). Communication becomes more effortless and conversations more constructive, performance increases, our relationships and our mental health improve, and we all move forward. Good Movement Trainings are designed to help farmers, ranchers and rural folks grow relationally through awareness, understanding and effective communication. During a training, we expedite self and social awareness using the tool of the Enneagram. The Enneagram is a personality typing system rooted in motivation. Instead of telling you what you do, like other personality typologies, the Enneagram sheds light on why we do what we do. It is broken out into nine different types that represent nine different ways of viewing the world and taking in information. In other words, it helps you understand why you are the way you are, why others are the way they are and how you can use that to step out of self-told lies with grace and compassion to draw good movement in conversations, relationships and life in rural America. ~NC~ ONLY the top bu s make the sale.
