It’s a phenomenal tool reserved for cattle owners. Speculators who do not own cattle can’t use LRP. Cattle ownership is a requirement and proof of ownership is required to receive indemnity. The cost is fixed, so there is no margin requirement, initial or maintenance. When you are quoted an LRP cost and coverage, that’s exactly what it will be when the contract ends. Other benefits of the program include the flexibility to cover as little as one head per night, without the need to commit to a whole 40,000 or 50,000-pound contract as you would on the board. There are considerations with LRP as well. For instance, you cannot lift an LRP contract; once it’s on, it’s on. Additionally, it is not available on days when the board does not trade, on Cattle on Feed Report days or on days when the board is locked limit. I often refer to the program as the crescent wrench of cattle hedging. It’s not a perfect fit for all operations but, like the crescent wrench, try to find a tractor toolbox without one. It’s a valuable tool in the box that has a place and time for use. If you want to learn more about LRP and whether it’s a fit for you, please contact one of our trusted advisors at thehomeagency.com or fnicgroup.com. ~NC~ About The Home Agency and NCIG: Effective Jan. 1, 2025, The Home Agency joined FNIC to leverage their combined experience to address the evolving needs of their clients and strengthen their presence in the region.
