In addition to workforce development, the university is investing in research that supports producers in their goals for efficiency, productivity and sustainability. One such effort is UNL’s participation in a new $27.4 million global initiative to study how livestock digest food and how those processes can be optimized to benefit producers. Led at UNL by geneticist and professor of animal science Matt Spangler, Ph.D., the $2.34 million project will collect and analyze methane emissions data from beef cattle. The goal is to identify natural genetic variation that influences methane output and link those traits with important production metrics. The result: usable tools to help producers select more efficient animals – those that grow well and produce more with fewer inputs. This project complements two additional $5 million research efforts underway at UNL. One project, led by Paul Kononoff, Ph.D., explores how genetics, gut microbiome and nutrition influence methane production. Another project, led by Galen Erickson, Ph.D., focuses on developing cost-effective, accurate methods for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from grazing cattle. Together, these projects are producing real-world tools that help producers optimize performance and profitability while meeting evolving market and environmental expectations. And when they are ready, Nebraska Extension will work with producers to implement these tools, just as they have done with so many other new technologies. I’m excited to work alongside our strong Extension system to ensure that the expertise of our university is reaching every Nebraskan. While the innovation and training happening across IANR are vital to the ongoing strength of livestock production in Nebraska and across the United States, they rely on strong, consistent support for federal research funding. In recent months, increased scrutiny of government spending and other federal actions have created uncertainty about the future of agricultural research. That’s why we’re especially grateful for the ongoing advocacy of the Nebraska Cattlemen, both for beef-specific research and for agriculture as a whole. Your voice in Washington, D.C., and across Nebraska ensures that agricultural science, education and innovation remain priorities. We value your partnership and appreciate your commitment to ensuring Nebraska remains a leader in food production. The future of Nebraska beef depends on more than tradition: it depends on innovation, education and strong relationships. Whether it’s training future veterinarians, delivering research-based solutions or advocating for Nebraska producers, the University of Nebraska is proud to stand beside you. On behalf of the entire IANR team, thank you for your trust, collaboration and leadership. Together, we’re building a future that honors Nebraska’s legacy and meets the challenges of tomorrow head-on. ~NC~ IANR CONTINUED FROM PAGE 38 AD INDEX SALE & EVENT CALENDAR Agri-Affiliates Inc....................38 Amber Coleman/NC Sales......43 American Foods Group............14 Big Iron Realty..........................4 Cedar River Feeders LLC........39 Chr.
