THE BIGGEST RISK PRODUCERS MAY BE MISSING Asked what risk concerns him most, Swift doesn’t hesitate: the consumer. “Economic data looks strong, but on the ground, many consumers are stretched thin,” he says. “When fuel prices rise, discretionary spending disappears. Beef is discretionary.” If consumers begin trading down proteins or reducing purchases, boxed beef values – and eventually cattle prices – will respond quickly. To conclude, Swift was asked to summarize the cattle market in a single thought. “It’s one of the most dynamic commodity markets in existence because you can’t store it,” he says.
